Tawaf Guide: How to Perform Tawaf During Umrah

Tawaf is one of the most meaningful parts of Umrah. It is the act of walking around the Kaaba seven times in worship, remembrance, and devotion to Allah. For many pilgrims, this is an emotional and unforgettable moment because they are standing in the sacred Masjid al-Haram and performing an act of worship practiced by generations of Muslims. Although Tawaf may seem simple, understanding the correct order and etiquette beforehand can help you perform it calmly and confidently.

Before beginning Tawaf, make sure you are in a state of Wudu and dressed appropriately according to the requirements of Ihram. Make your intention to perform Tawaf for Umrah in your heart. You do not need to make the intention complicated or worry about saying a particular sentence. The important thing is that you know you are beginning the Tawaf of Umrah sincerely for the sake of Allah.

Tawaf begins at the Black Stone, known as Hajar al-Aswad. Position yourself so that you can identify the starting point and then begin walking with the Kaaba on your left side. The direction of Tawaf is counterclockwise. When you reach the Black Stone, you may touch or kiss it if you can do so without pushing, hurting, or disturbing other pilgrims. If the area is crowded, it is perfectly appropriate to gesture toward the Black Stone from a distance and continue walking. There is no need to struggle through a crowd simply to reach it.

You must complete seven full circuits around the Kaaba. Each circuit starts and finishes at the Black Stone. It can be easy to lose count when the area is crowded, so keep track carefully from the beginning. Walk at a comfortable pace and avoid rushing. During Tawaf, your attention should remain focused on worship rather than on competing with other pilgrims or trying to stay close to the Kaaba.

Men observing the relevant Sunnah practices for Tawaf may uncover the right shoulder during Tawaf and walk briskly during the first three circuits, provided doing so is safe and does not inconvenience others. The remaining four circuits are completed at a normal walking pace. Women walk normally throughout Tawaf. In all circumstances, consideration for other worshippers is important, and no Sunnah practice should become a reason to push or cause harm.

There is no requirement to recite a different specific dua during each circuit. You can remember Allah, recite Quran, send blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, or make personal supplications from your heart. You may ask Allah for forgiveness, guidance, good health, family blessings, success, protection, and goodness in this life and the Hereafter. A commonly recited supplication between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone is a prayer asking Allah for goodness in this world and the Hereafter and protection from the punishment of the Fire.

As you continue, take care to walk around the outside of Hijr Ismail, the semicircular area beside the Kaaba. Since this area is regarded as part of the Kaaba, passing through it would mean that you have not completed the circuit around the entire structure. Similarly, when passing the Yemeni Corner, touching it is recommended when this can be done easily and safely, but there is no reason to push through people to reach it.

After completing the seventh circuit, step away from the flow of pilgrims and prepare for the next part of Umrah. It is recommended to offer two units of prayer after Tawaf, preferably near Maqam Ibrahim when there is sufficient space, though you should not obstruct people or create congestion. You can then continue with the remaining rites of Umrah, including Sa’i between Safa and Marwah.

Above all, remember that Tawaf is an act of worship, not simply a physical walk around the Kaaba. Patience, humility, kindness, and sincere remembrance of Allah are central to the experience. By learning the basic steps beforehand and remaining mindful of those around you, you can complete Tawaf with greater confidence while giving your attention to the spiritual purpose of Umrah.
