Tawaf is one of the most meaningful parts of Umrah. It is the act of walking around the Kaaba seven times in worship, remembrance, and devotion to Allah. For many pilgrims, this is an emotional and unforgettable moment because they are standing in the sacred Masjid al-Haram and performing an act of worship practiced by generations of Muslims. Although Tawaf may seem simple, understanding the correct order and etiquette beforehand can help you perform it calmly and confidently.

Before beginning Tawaf, make sure you are in a state of Wudu and dressed appropriately according to the requirements of Ihram. Make your intention to perform Tawaf for Umrah in your heart. You do not need to make the intention complicated or worry about saying a particular sentence. Tawaf begins at the Black Stone, known as Hajar al-Aswad. Position yourself so that you can identify the starting point and then begin walking with the Kaaba on your left side. Similarly, when passing the Yemeni Corner, touching it is recommended when this can be done easily and safely, but there is no reason to push through people to reach it.
After completing the seventh circuit, step away from the flow of pilgrims and prepare for the next part of Umrah. It is recommended to offer two units of prayer after Tawaf, preferably near Maqam Ibrahim when there is sufficient space, though you should not obstruct people or create congestion. You can then continue with the remaining rites of Umrah, including Sa’i between Safa and Marwah.
Above all, remember that Tawaf is an act of worship, not simply a physical walk around the Kaaba. Patience, humility, kindness, and sincere remembrance of Allah are central to the experience. By learning the basic steps beforehand and remaining mindful of those around you, you can complete Tawaf with greater confidence while giving your attention to the spiritual purpose of Umrah.
