Three Types Of Hajj

Hajj is a fundamental pillar of Islam, an annual spiritual experience undertaken by Muslims at least once their lifetime to express their faith in Allah. The Hajj means ‘pilgrimage’ to the holy city of Makkah (Mecca) in Arabic and must be performed by every Muslim each year during the first ten days of the sacred month of Zil-Hajj. Hajj teaches Muslims to practise good deeds, humanity, and be sincere to Allah. Three types of Hajj are followings:

  1. Hajj al Qiran
  2. Hajj al Ifrad
  3. Hajj al Tamattu

Hajj al-Qiran – In this type of Hajj, a Muslim performs both umrah and hajj together while being in the state of Ihram (white cloth specific for the Hajj or Umrah). This type of Hajj requires a sacrificial animal to complete the rituals of Hajj. A pilgrim (Hajji) who performs this type of Hajj is called Qaarin.

Hajj al-Ifrad – Hajj al-Ifrad refers to performing the rituals of Hajj alone without the need of a sacrificial animal (Qurbani ka janwar-Hadee). A Hajji who undertakes this type of Hajj is called Mufrid Hajji.

Hajj al-Tamattu – This is the most common type of Hajj and the one Prophet Muhammed (S.A.W.W) encouraged his companions (Sahabah) to perform. It refers to performing Umrah rituals during the Hajj season and then proceeding to complete the steps to Hajj between the 8th and 13th day of Zil-Hajj. A sacrificial animal (Qurbani ka janwar-Hadee) is required in this type of Hajj and both Umrah and Hajj rituals are performed by entering a separate state of Ihram. A Hajji who perform this type of Hajj is called Muttamatti.
